English

English is one of the subjects studied at Bowral High School that is compulsory from Year 7 through to Year 12.

Students from Year 7 to Year 10 follow a course that conforms to the Junior English Syllabus. The program is divided into the five major English Syllabus areas which include: Spoken Language, Reading, Writing, Literature and Mass Media.

All students follow a common program of study. Student s will develop a range of knowledge and skills in:

  • Literature (including novels, short stories, poetry and dramatic texts)
  • Reading (including a wade range of text types from various literary and media forms, wide reading assignments, research and library assignments)
  • Writing (including a variety of text typesm such as narrative, persuasive, descriptive   and poetic, bioraphical and so on, with an empasis on spelling and grammer)
  • Media (including film, radio, television and print)
  • Spoken Language ( including  group work activities, class discussion and oral reports and presentations, prepared and impromptu speeches, debates, role plays and dramatic presentations).

Senior English

English has four English Courses which are:

English Standard

In the Preliminary(Yr11) English course students explore the ways events, experiences, ideas and processes are represented in and through texts.

In the HSC(Yr12) English course students reflect on and demonstrate the effectiveness of texts for different audiences and purposes.

English Advanced

In the Preliminary English course students explore the ways events, experiences, ideas, values and processes are represented in and through texts and analyse the ways in which texts reflect different attitudes and values.

In HSC English students analyse and evaluate texts and the ways they are valued in their contexts.

English Extension

HSC English Extension 1 & 2 this course has prerequisties.

Prerequisites:

(a) English Advanced course

(b) Preliminary English Extention course is a prerequisite for Extension course 1.

(c) ExtensionCourse 1 is a prerequisite for Extension 2 course.
