TECHNOLOGY (Mandatory)
In Years 7 & 8 all students are required to study a subject called Technology (Mandatory), this subject is taught by both the Industrial Arts and Home Economics faculties. Students’ work in three ‘Areas of Study”; Built Environments, Products, and Information and Communications, and over Years 7 & 8 the students design and produce six design projects based on different specific technologies.
Technology and an understanding of design processes enable people to manage, interpret, shape and alter their environment to improve their quality of life at home, school, in work places and in the broader community
In Industrial Arts the students produce design projects in the following ‘Areas of Study’ and ‘Specific Technologies’.

Built Environment - Timber Technologies
Students are introduced to responsible and safe use of tools, materials and techniques through the production of a ‘wooden mouse’.
The students then apply the skills learnt during the production of the wooden mouse to design, plan, construct and evaluate their solution to an assigned design brief.
Products - Metals Technologies
This unit of work involves the students in gaining practical experience in the shaping, fabrication and joining of both sheetmetal, and metal bars and rods.
During the development of a solution to an assigned design brief students will need to:
consider factors influencing design
generate and communicate design ideas and solutions
research and experiment with materials and techniques,
in order to produce a quality design project.
Information and Communication – Media Technologies
Students in this unit of work will experience working with innovative and emerging digital media technologies. Working, as a member of a design team students will learn how to apply group work and collaborative strategies to develop storyboards and scripts to plan, produce, and edit, digital animation and digital movie production design projects.
ELECTIVE COURSES
In Year 8 students are given the opportunity to select two, one semester length elective courses suited to their interests. The Industrial Arts faculty offers the following elective courses, which are introductory courses to the Stage 5 (Year 9 & 10) Industrial Technology and Graphics Technology courses:
Graphics
Industrial Technology - Engineering
Industrial Technology - Jewellery
Industrial Technology - Metal
Industrial Technology - Timber
Examples of work produced in these elective courses are shown below:

PROTECTIVE FOOTWEAR REQUIREMENTS FOR PRACTICAL SUBJECTS
When purchasing school shoes parents are asked to be mindful of the NSW Department of Education and Training, Occupational Health & Safety requirement regarding protective footwear. This requirement states that all students involved in practical activities in subject areas including Industrial Arts and Home Economics must wear: “shoes with fully enclosed leather uppers, including the tongue, and a stout sole”.
This requirement is satisfied through the purchase of black leather, lace up school shoes as per the school’s uniform policy. Jogger style shoes do not provide adequate protection and are therefore not acceptable.
Click on shoe for protective shoe policy.
Students who present themselves to class without the correct protective footwear will not be permitted to participate in practical activities.
